What is IUI?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is a fertility treatment that increases the chance of pregnancy by placing specially washed and concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This bypasses the cervix and reduces the distance sperm must travel to reach the egg.
When is IUI recommended?
- Unexplained infertility
- Mild male factor infertility (low sperm count or motility)
- Cervical mucus problems or hostility
- Donor sperm insemination for single women or same‑sex couples
The IUI Procedure
The process is painless and takes only a few minutes. A thin catheter is inserted through the cervix, and the prepared sperm sample is gently injected. Many patients describe it as similar to a pap smear.
Success Rates
Success depends on age, underlying fertility issues, and whether ovulation‑inducing medication is used. Typically, pregnancy rates range from 10‑20% per cycle. Your doctor will discuss your personalised prognosis.
